Last thursday, Mohammed Elniel was working behind the register at Pine Mart Gas in Niskayuna, when three men entered the store, sprayed him in the face with mase and robbed him at knife point.
"They took the money and ran," Elniel says.
In the week since, there have been several more armed robberies in the area. The Gulf station on Central Avenue in Colonie was robbed Saturday, and the Gulf Mega Mart, also on Central in Colonie, was robbed early yesterday morning.
Surveillance video from that store shows two masked suspects using a semi-automatic handgun to threaten the cashier.
Within the same hour, there was an attempted robbery at a Sunoco in Niskayuna and another robbery at a Sunoco in Schenectady.
Based on the surveillance video, police believe they are all connected.
"They're wearing red gloves, which are similar in both," points out Lt. Robert Winn with the Colonie Police Department. "She has a red bandanna on her face and the gun is a small, semi-automatic hand gun."
Now, police are hoping someone recognizes something about the suspects before they strike again.
Meanwhile, they say gas station attendants should to be extra cautious. Winn says the reason the Niskayuna Sunoco attempt was unsuccessful was because of extra safety precautions.
"They keep their door locked at night," Winn points out. "They only allow entrance through a pass through window with the clerk or if they're familiar with the person."
As for the Pine Mart robbery, police have made no arrests. Open only until 10pm, Elniel says there aren't any security options he can afford.
"What can I do? I can't do anything about it," he says. "If it happens again, I'm just going to close."
